Passions
History of Passions
Passions made its debut on NBC Television in 1999 and replaced Another World in its time slot. It only lasted until 2007 when it was picked up by DirecTV.
The show had a unique twist and delved into paranormal happenings in the town of Harmony. Just as other soap operas do the stories focused on a core group of families and their loves and lives. The show also dealt with multi racial families as well.
The show started out as an hour long show from the very beginning run five times a week. When it was taken over by DirecTV the show was only run four days a week instead. It then changed to three days a week until it ended in 2008 on DirecTV.
The show was created after the possession storyline on Days of Our Lives brought in a great deal of interest from viewers. The plotline on Days seemed to irritate some loyal fans at the same time as it brought in new ones. Passions was starting with no loyal fan base and it was thought that the new viewers who tuned into Days would tune into Passions.
The show continued to feature stories regarding witches, warlocks and the passage to Hell in its time on the air. All at the same time the usual romance and betrayal that is typical of a soap opera was occurring.
Passions was a show of controversies with the first lesbian couple shown in a bed as well as the first gay man couple shown in a bed together. The show continued to raise eyebrows during its short run on television.
The show continued to be run in reruns by Super Channel through 2008. The show was a big hit among its fans and it constantly worked to weave a fanciful web around the plot lines. Evidence that the show did not take itself too seriously were the many mentions of the show within the show.
