All My Children
History of All My Children
All My Children debuted in 1970 on the ABC Television network as a half hour continuing drama. The story centers on the small town of Pine Valley with a host of characters and their problems.
In 1977 the show expanded to an hour and it very quickly drew in a large younger audience. The character of Erica Kane has been with the show since its beginnings and Susan Lucci has been the only Ms. Kane.
As many soap operas do, the show focuses on several families within the town and their interactions with each other. The Cortlands, Martins, Kanes and Chandlers have all been a part of the fabric of the town of Pine Valley over the years.
The show has also tackled some weighty issues in its time. It was the first drama on television to discuss the Vietnam War during the seventies. Character Erica Kane also created controversy for the show by having an abortion in the months after the landmark Roe V. Wade decision.
Through the years the show has consistently drawn a young audience and was the first soap opera to gain a thirty percent male audience in its early years.
The storylines have mesmerized fans of the show, many of whom have been watching since its beginnings. No other type of television show encourages as much loyalty as a soap opera.
Many of the original characters on the show remain along with the original actors who have portrayed them since their introduction. The show has gained attention for its controversial storylines as well as its humorous side that fans love.
The razor sharp wit of the characters offers a lighter side to the sometimes heavy drama that occurs on the show on a daily basis. From the day it aired in 1970 till today, All My Children continues to strive to bring new drama and entertainment to their loyal fans.
