The Young and the Restless
History of The Young and the Restless
The Young and the Restless began in 1973 in the fictional town of Genoa City, Wisconsin. The show focuses on the Brooks and Foster families in the earlier days and as many soap operas before, the events and dramas in the lives of each member of the family along with those who touch their lives. The show has the distinction of being the only soap opera that has successfully written out the original cast and brought in new ones. The Abbotts and the Newmans were the next family rivals in Genoa City that has remained ever since.
Originally beginning as a half hour show, it eventually expanded to hour long shows in 1980. The Young and the Restless currently holds the number one spot in daytime soaps. The show also has the longest running rivalry between two characters that still exists today. The feud between Kay Chancellor and Jill Foster all centered on Phillip Chancellor who was married to Kay but divorced and married Liz on his deathbed. The two have fought over the death of Phillip ever since.
The show has experimented over the years with timeslots in an effort to bring viewers back to the soap opera which has been in a decline in recent years. While The Young and the Restless is still at the top of the ratings the overall picture for daytime dramas is not good. The show tried a timeslot closer to the news hour to attract viewers home from work early and it is also rebroadcast on Soap Net at 7pm nightly for viewers who miss it during the day. Like other soaps it is also rebroadcast on the weekends in week long blocks of episodes to catch the viewer up completely on any show that they may have missed during the week.
