The Bold and the Beautiful
History of The Bold and the Beautiful
The Bold and the Beautiful first made its premiere on CBS Television in 1987. It was created to be a sister show to the very successful The Young and the Restless. It is currently the only soap opera on television with a thirty minute run time and it is the youngest show on television after the cancellation of Passions.
The show is centered on the Forrester family and their family business Forrester Creations which is a women’s fashion business. As in all soap opera families there is intrigue, drama and infidelity running through the lives of all members of the family and those that they interact with in their lives.
In the midst of the family drama in the Forrester clan, there is the fashion rival Spectra Fashions to contend with. The subplots involving Spectra Fashions and its head Sally Spectra allowed some comic relief to the soap opera. In later years, Sally Spectra shut down her rival company and eventually went to work for Forrester Creations.
The Bold and the Beautiful is unusual in daytime soap operas in that it tends to devote more time to the core characters rather than develop second storylines. Viewers of the show will note that they can devote entire weeks to just one of their current storylines without any mention of other characters or plots. This has created some criticism for the soap, but fans get an in depth look at the one storyline that is concentrated on during these times.
The show also tends to drop storylines very quickly when they are not working. This has gotten both criticism and praise at the same time. On the one hand the show does not waste time on a storyline that is not going anywhere and others might find it a little disconcerting to see a storyline disappear without a single explanation.
